What Are Pat Kiernan’s Bell House Trivia Nights REALLY Like?

Hands down, one of the greatest honors I have as both an entrepreneur and event professional is the opportunity to work with Pat Kiernan. Since announcing our special collaboration nearly four years ago, the beloved NY1 morning news anchor, WABC 77 radio host and veteran game show host has brought nothing but positive energy to TrivWorks: experience, expertise, mentorship and perspective come immediately to mind.

When we decided to expand our partnership beyond NYC team building and corporate event entertainment to offer select public events as well, we created an opportunity for people who might not otherwise be able to experience a trivia event hosted by Pat the chance to do so. From the planning stages of our first event back in 2011 – a trivia fund raiser to benefit VH1 Save The Music Foundation – there were many things which I felt confident would go well: a unique trivia contest at a professional performance venue, a robust response from Pat’s fans, positive exposure, happy prize partners. But in the ensuing three years and over a dozen events since, there have been many things which I wasn’t expecting, which I think in fact define these special events as what they truly are:

Enthusiasm

You can feel the energy the moment you enter one of these events: up to 300 Pat Kiernan fans, packed into the cavernous-yet-strangely-intimate environs of The Bell House. When Pat takes the stage, he is received like a rock star: screams, cheers, cell phone camera flashes. Pat’s fans LOVE Pat, more than I could have possibly imagined – and that energy and enthusiasm only grows over the course of the evening.

Humor

Pat’s a funny guy – anybody who watches his dry and witty delivery of what’s “In The Papers” each morning knows this. But when he provides side commentary to his pop culture trivia questions, or engages the live audience via full-room or onstage 1-on-1 “mini games,” that’s when the belly laughs REALLY come out.

Surprises

We make a point to incorporate surprises throughout the event for the audience to enjoy, with at least one big surprise to really get everybody pumped – Pat’s hosted onstage pie eating contests, dance-offs, welcomed celebrity guests, debuted viral videos, and even serenaded the crowd with a customized rendition of Pharrell Williams’ “Happy!”

Everybody Wins

Theme-appropriate prizes are given away throughout the event; while both the winning and runner-up teams will take home prizes, perhaps the greatest excitement comes from the 1-on-1 “mini games” in between rounds, when the winner gets to spin the big prize wheel, with the audience going NUTS each time. The onstage lectern is stocked with fun “booby prizes” for the contestant who doesn’t win, and Pat’s been known to roam the audience during the scorekeeping to take selfies and hand out both candy and TrivWorks lip balm. Whether your team is a contender or not, whether you get called onstage or not, the reality is everybody in the room feels like a winner.

I realize that a simple blog doesn’t do justice to Pat’s events, however for those who haven’t experienced it firsthand, the message I hope it conveys is that these events are more than just a trivia night; they’re an opportunity to do something different on a weekday, a chance to have playful fun and connect with similar-minded people, to laugh, eat/drink, and maybe even go onstage and win something. If you’ve never been, I encourage you to come check it out – it’s truly like nothing else!
