TGI Monday!

Readers of this blog are aware that my wife and I recently welcomed our second child, Miles (aka: “TrivWorks Intern No. 2”), and as you might imagine, our world has changed significantly. During the day, things are pretty manageable: while I’m at work, TrivWorks Intern No. 1 is at daycare, and my wife is at home with the baby. At night, though, things gets dicey; both kids need our full attention, while both adults are totally frazzled & exhausted. By the time things finally get settled, we’re completely wiped.

Rough as things are with the newborn, weekends are far worse. It’s weird – you go through your entire life longing for the weekend…until you’ve got 2 kids under 2 at home. When daycare isn’t open and you’re not escaping at work, reality sets in: we’ve got these loud little monsters who need to be looked after and cared for, and who require our complete and undivided attention for 48 straight hours!

Which is why my wife and I have adopted a new phrase come Monday morning: TGIM (Thank God it’s Monday!)

Truth be told, I actually have used this phrase before – when I was director of adult education at Manhattan’s 92nd Street Y, part of my responsibilities included overseeing a robust singles program, mostly for people in their 30s/40s and up. Feeling that the existing singles offerings were creaky and unoriginal, one of the first new initiatives I embarked on back in 2006 was to establish a bar mixer series which I called “TGI Mondays” – the concept was the same as for our NYC corporate team building events in that Manhattan venues, notoriously expensive and difficult to book later in the week, were slow in the early week, and would bend over backwards to welcome a large group on a Monday.

Well, now I’m saying TGIM for a completely different reason, that being the weekend is over, and I can finally enjoy some peace and quiet – at work.

Phew! TGI Monday!
