The Most Rewarding Part of Producing NYC’s Largest Trivia Nights
This week, TrivWorks produced another successful trivia night at Brooklyn’s Bell House performance venue, led by our “Special Host” Pat Kiernan. Held only a few times a year, these large-scale events are intended to provide public access to our unique trivia team building experiences for both Pat’s fans and NYC’s trivia lovers, who might not otherwise have the chance to do so. After two years of these special events, we are both honored and proud to have seen this grow into the largest trivia night series in all of New York City.
Requiring a tremendous amount of advance prep work, we put in a great deal of thought and care to each event in order to to provide all of attendees with the greatest experience possible. Actually, that’s putting it mildly – as with any 300-person event, as the date approaches our Bell House trivia nights become all-consuming: fact-checking and revising trivia, securing last-minute prizes, confirming anything and everything, putting out fires. At the event itself, I am keenly alert to everything happening both onstage and off, stubbornly refusing to enjoy one sip of alcohol or eat one slice of pie until the event is successfully concluded, and the last patron has left.
So, what do I get out of it?
I’ve been a professional trivia host for 7 years now, and of course love hosting events – however on these nights, Pat’s the one onstage, not me. I also love friendly trivia competition, but alas, I don’t get to play. What is it, then? Why do I do it?
For me, the most rewarding part of producing NYC’s largest trivia night isn’t being in the spotlight – rather, it’s seeing everyone in attendance having an absolute blast, and knowing that all of our extremely hard work and efforts have paid off. When the crowd roars with approval over a particularly good question, or laughs their heads off from a funny wrong answer or perfectly-timed quip from Pat, it just makes me feel so great; when we reveal special surprises we’ve planned for the evening, such as dance contests & celebrity appearances – or, in the case of this week’s event, a pie eating contest – score a direct hit and the audience reaction exceeds my expectations, there’s nothing an event producer enjoys more.
I absolutely love creating these special pubic events, and even though they require so much effort to pull off, the feeling of satisfaction afterwards simply can’t be beat. I go to bed those nights feeling like the luckiest guy in the world for doing something I love for a living – and really, what more reward could I possible ask for?
