Does Your Team Trust You?

Trust matters.  Trust is crucial to performance.  Your team will simply be more productive if they trust you and your leadership.  Trust is crucial to profitability too.  If your team trusts you not only will they use their time more productively, they will share creative ideas that make your organization more profitable.

Does your team trust you?  There are several ways you can find out.  Ask a trusted employee how others in the group feel.  Don’t ask for specific comments about certain employees.  Instead try and understand the overall feelings of the entire group.

Listen to your team as you work with them.  When you ask a question do members of your team start to answer candidly and then catch themselves?  Do they freely share thoughts and opinions with you or do they carefully guard their words?  If responses are guarded, trust may be lacking.

Trust is earned.  It takes time to earn the trust of your team.  Show the team that you look out for their best interests.  Give credit for hard work and acknowledge effort.  Spend time with your team outside of the office.  Let them get to know who you are as an individual and demonstrate an interest in them.  Share experiences, both inside and out of the office, build the type of trusting relationships that enhance the workplace.
